Well, Paul, I am afraid that the comparison isn't going to be quite that
close. After looking at my notes more carefully, it turned out that this
steinway D is really serial #376678 - 1962. So I don't know how it
compares to your 1971. Also, apparently we did get funding for all new
action parts on that piano (it being a "D") so the data is on all new
parts - we were trying to select the best wippen/shank combination
(using the Renner parts kit). So here is the data, for what it's worth,
on Key # 27.

With straight heel wippen:

Knuckle DW UW Friction Approximate
keydip
position
at 1 7/8" strike distance

16.5 mm 51 g. 24 g. 13.5 g. .390"
17 mm 50 g. 22 g. 14 g. .390"
16 mm (didn't bother - can't regulate properly - jack jams into rep
lever before sufficient aftertouch is achieved)

With angled heel wippen:

Knuckle DW UW Friction Approximate
keydip
position
at 1 7/8" strike distance

16.5 mm 55 g. 31 g. 12 g. .420"
17 mm 50 g. 22 g. 14 g. .420"
16 mm 59 g. 26 g. 16.5 g.
.420" (jack jamming into rep lever...)

The Steinway M data isn't very useful - we were trying out various used
wippens from donated sets, guessing at their origin...
