[CAUT] Benches

Well written John! (Tuners life article?)

As far as benches go, the techs before me started putting a small chain on each piano and tethering it to the piano. Benches stayed put, but at what cost? The chain hurt the finish of the bench and piano. People tripped on the chain. The hole where the chain was screwed into the bench often tore out and left the chain dangling.......

First thing I did was remove all the chains. With 425 pianos (Only 20 had chains) we have only lost 2 benches in 9 years. Yes, we find a bench somewhere it shouldn't be now and then. So what. Life is too short to worry about it. We keep a couple extra benches and replace it. Suddenly, one day, we find the old one.

An unconventional approach may not be a bad idea. Years ago I stopped
at a convenience store to borrow a water bucket to fill up my car
radiator. The bucked had something written on it with a big black
marker. After I finished using the bucket, I asked the attendant why
they wrote what they did on the bucket. She said they had had a problem
with people stealing their buckets, but ever since she wrote that
sentence on the bucket, no one has stolen it. It read, "If you steal
this water bucket, you will be cursed for life."

Go figure.
