(Ed Sutton) Ed and Israel: This concept is already being implemented, thus proving the viability of the idea, at CSPT. In discussions with Fred, Eric, and others, I have redesigned the 2nd option in our advanced curriculum (Concert Prep and Institutional Management) with the suggested CAUT syllabus as a core. The program is a year long, and designed for students who have completed the first year, or who are already RPT. It involves internships with a variety of musical venues here in Chicago as well as intense practice and testing in technical areas, as well as some hands-on deeper major restoration topics here in the shop. First a person would become an RPT, then there could be a choice of classes and exams through which a person creates his/her particular career, shaped around individual talents, interests and resources. Perhaps PTG would not be the educational provider so much as the agency that creates the syllabus, accredits teachers and administers exams, or perhaps the umbrella under which individuals could offer courses (not that different from what we already do). In my dream world of happy, curious, interested people, such an open syllabus would be an invitation to learn and grow, and such a system might encourage people with special areas of knowledge and experience to create new courses of study.
