  It may be that keeping the relationship a contract relationship rather than a salaried position is the best answer ultimately.  At least it allows you to negotiate fees for specific jobs rather than try and figure out what falls under the entire salary umbrella and subjecting yourself to unlimited hours.  It also allows you to better control the relationship between the scope of a particular project and the budget for that project.  While it does mean that benefits such as retirement, health care, sick leave are not part of the package, you may be better off making a higher fee based wage and buying your own benefits, some of which are at least tax deductible.  

   

  However, only when there is a shortage of individuals willing to work for very little will many (not all) universities have the incentive to make other arrangements or pay a decent salary or a higher contract rate.  One thing is certain, the lower salaries don’t exempt you from a critical view of the quality of your work.
