Hi Israel

Very cool you are getting good results this way.  I agree with your 
basic standpoint that its best to deal with as unmanipulated a hammer as 
possible when installling new hammers.

I personally choose Renner Wurzen II's with the Steinway type of tail 
but in raw form so that I can determine myself how much wood to take 
away. Gives me a much wider choice of SW's then pre-tailed hammers do.
