Jeff, If it isn't set upright initially for the pins and string diameters you are using, it will not sit properly or coil properly. Are you sure you are making all of those adjustments before beginning? I've had mine for 15 years or so. It has been acting up lately, winding the coil on TOP rather than underneath the beckett. There is a lot of "play" or wiggle as it sits on the pin, too. I think the inner core piece must be compromised in some way. I have a colleague who purchased one from Schaff (which had some problems - another story) and purchased a new redesigned inner core from somebody else (who?). But I think it was the last one. His works great! The inner core fits all the way down on the tuning pin close to the beckett and is reinforced. Anyway, I guess I'll keep my fingers crossed - or just change my methods and start stringing by hand!
