In light of Don comments, this is a reply from the man in my chorus. John is a retired math/physics professor. At the time he wrote this this, he was a professor at Samoa Community College.

More interesting discussion. Reminded me of a paragraph I wrote some years ago about the natural science of American Samoa. Regarding ocean waves, I wrote:

"Two major behavioral characteristics of the ocean are discussed here—the waves and the tides. Everything else of concern derives from one or both of these phenomena.

"Every wave has a history: Small ripples from the splash of cresting waves, chop from local wind, swells from distant storms, oscillations from land reflections, and the premier long-period wave, that of the solunar tide. If our senses were attuned to such low frequencies, we would be aware of the polyphonic warble of the ocean waves. From the tiniest soprano ripples with frequencies around 15 hertz down to the deep pedal-notes of the two-cycles-per-day tide (24 octaves below middle G), the ocean produces a silent symphony that has played for thousands of millions of years and will continue for thousands of millions more. ..."
