When stringing an upright, the coil-lifting advantage works left to right, starting at note 88.

  All,

I'm wondering why John Travis' book says to start at 88. The more I think about it, the more it makes sense to start at the low end It's a great book and use his scalings often, but it appears more sensable to work low to high so one can get a better coil on the tuning pin without so much mess of touching up paint, or whatever on the plate. Im not lefty and the coils, when properly set have the coil just right to do it right handed.

How much tension do y"all put on the strings before bass stringing. I try to put "just enough" to keep the coils etc from settling too much. It's hard to fix once their all in there. Then, when the bass strings are on, I follow Travis's ideas on bringing up to pitch....The rachet thing sounds like a good idea.

What Fred says. Also, I use a tuning tip on a ratchet. It is easier to push the ratchet with my left hand, while holding up the coil with my right hand, with easy access to the coil. For a string hook, instead of the traditional hook, I made my own using a Steinway capstan screw regulator, (Pianotek part # SCR-2, Schaff part # 97). bent to look like a Norris pedal spring (Schaff #584), only with 90 degree angles at each end.

  Dear List,

I've always restrung grand starting at note 88, but am considering starting at the bottom of the plain wire and work up to give me better control at getting better coils. Are there opinions either way from y'all?

  Thanks

  Paul
