I'm glad you're running this! There's an enormous amount of basic info =
that it seems most pianists have no idea about.

* Escapement and aftertouch: the pressure varies throughout the =
keystroke. This helps fine control.
* Grands repeat better than uprights: you only need to release a grand =
key halfway to repeat; all the way for uprights.
* What the pedals do; how the middle pedal function varies.
* A piano is not a box; the soundboard is exposed, thus it's like a =
fine violin without a case (would you leave a $20,000 violin in an =
unheated garage?).
* As much total string tension as 10 midsize cars weigh (20,000 =
pounds). As many strings as 40 guitars.
* C8 is 2" long. If C1 were the same gauge, it would be 20 feet long =
(or more). Therefore bigger is better. String scales are different =
between pianos.
* Like cars and boats, smaller pianos are cheaper, have fewer features, =
use poorer materials. An extra 4" or 6" can make a big difference =
overall.
* Pianos have wear. Describe the typical service needed the first =
year, years 2-5, 5-10, 10+.
* Most pianos have no "antique" value, even if (maybe especially even =
if!) 100 years or more old.=20
* Pianos sound and play very differently, even different pianos of the =
same model.

  1. the names of the case parts.
  2. the name and number of the keys
  3. the name of the major components of the piano, like strings, =
soundboard, pin block, etc.=20
  4. why a piano goes out of tune
  5. where to place a piano in a room
  6. how often a piano should be voiced and regualted=20
  7. the effects of temperature and humidity changes on a piano.
  8. where to look for a piano tuner.
