David, my experience with this design over the last 25 years has been that compared to other designs this pedal makes more noise than most. I replaced felt and leather with alittle softer and thicker with success but even with that it still seems more sensitive to making noise on the up than most other designs. I had some success pointing this out to the professor at one school and focused his students more on controlling the up motion which after all is good performance practice.
