   Hi Wim
  If both are made in 92 often it's possible just for fun to switch the=20
entire action from one to the other & play with it. It's that FUN part agai=
n.
   . Yes it may not line up perfectly (or at all) but it would be worth a=20
quick try & it would tell volumnes immediately I should think. Yes?

  Last year I asked about the lack of sound from one of our D's. (If you=20
recall, Olga Kern didn't like it). I got a lot of good advice, and below ar=
e two=20
posts I got from Jeff and Eric. Since then I have done a lot of work on the=
=20
new D, but now, it just sits there. Most of the players, including faculty=20
and students, prefer the older piano. Personally, I like the sound I get fr=
om=20
the new D, but then maybe I'm prejudiced. I don't have the thick skin Fred=20
has, so this is becoming a personal challenge. =20

I wonder if any of you who have a similar situation, (2 concert grands wher=
e=20
is one is preferred over the other), if you've tried switching hammers? I=20
have thought about doing this, but if it has been tried before without much=
=20
success, I can save the time doing it. Any advice?

Hi  Wim,
Actually, I take things like that very seriously. But not too personally. M=
y=20
sense is that there is a lot of =E2=80=9Cherd instinct=E2=80=9D in any depa=
rtment. At the=20
moment, =E2=80=9Ceveryone=E2=80=9D plays our newer piano, though both are q=
uite well set up,=20
IMO (I guess I like the newer one a wee bit better, but it=E2=80=99s close=20=
to a toss=20
up). There are a couple of folks who are ornery enough to have their own=20
personal opinions, and choose #2, but everyone else wants =E2=80=9Cthe bett=
er one =E2=80=93 you=20
know, the new one.=E2=80=9D That may be what you are experiencing. Word got=
 out that=20
the new piano isn=E2=80=99t up to snuff, so everybody avoids it. It=E2=80=
=99s certainly a=20
line to insert in your psyche to help ease the pain <g>.
Which isn=E2=80=99t to say you shouldn=E2=80=99t continue to explore possib=
ilities with the=20
poor rejected one. I doubt swapping hammers would do the trick, but it=E2=
=80=99s=20
worthwhile experimenting a bit, exchanging just a few samples and seeing ho=
w=20
much difference and of what sort you get. You have to be VERY finicky about=
=20
alignment to strings to make this a fair test. If there is a substantial ch=
ange,=20
and in a positive direction, then you know that hammers are something to=20
focus on. Do it both ways: hammers from the newer one into the older as wel=
l (I=E2=80=99m=20
talking shank and flange, too, not popping off and re-gluing for this=20
experiment).
