Sorry if this is a duplicate. Thanks for all the suggestions. The scariest suggestion was the one about the improperly bored agraffes from Steinway. This particular piano is a Steinway "M" from 1961. The evidence suggests it has the original strings (old string braid, tarnish on the steel strings). The most optimist one was not enough bearing through the agraffe. It did look like there was not much of an angle. I will try out all the suggestions and I'll let you know how it turns out. Thanks again. Bob Callaghan
