50-cm centre pins

Maybe I missed something...the correct size for the birdseye/bushing is
determined then that size in the long center pins are inserted into the
bushing and pulled through to the end?  This burnishes the bushing and then
the center pin material is nipped off.  I guess the nipped end, which might
be slightly distorted from the cut, doesn't cause a problem with the next
bushing?  The 50-cm center pin gets shorter and shorter.  How short can it
get before the burnishing isn't as effective?  Am I missing something?
