Ric,

There's no picture to confirm an actual wipp assist spring, but in the
Steinway Patent section of their webpage there is a reference to "grand
piano action with support spring to lessen the weight at the inner ends of
the keys" July 15, 1882 - C.F. Theodore Steinway.

Looking further back, there's "grand piano action with adjustable balance
spring to lessen the force needed to depress the key" May 24, 1871 - C.F.
Theodore Steinway

It would be interesting to see these drawings but it sure sounds like the
same concept.
