I'm wrapping up my 5th school year and I've replaced one bass string in one of our "new" Baldwin 6000s and Baldwin replaced that one under warranty if I remember correctly. In the corner of my shop there are the remains of several sets of universals hanging on their original rings on coat hooks in a corner of the shop, hung there by my predecessor. He used key leveling leads to weight them down and aside from a set or two, they now hang fairly straight. There is a 25 year old set of bass strings for a Steinway D still in the box in one of the cabinets, less one single bass he used as a replacement probably 20 years ago. I've noticed maybe 6 or 8 universals in the pianos we kept after the 77 piano purchase in 1995. So, it looks to me as if there haven't been many bass strings changed here in a long time. I'd hate to have to know I was placing an order to Mapes once a week! My budget wouldn't handle that very well. Jeff > This is interesting.
