Dear Friends, At the risk of cross-posting to all the lists, here are wome web pages with the death notice and obituaries for Newton Hunt. The links to the web pages are at the bottom. Newton was a great technician, with a vast amount of knowledge about pianos. I did not know him well, but did correspond with him by e-mail a little bit. The last time I saw him, it was in Chicago this summer at the PTG National convention. Newton had his lap-top computer set up in the Cyber-Cafe on Sunday morning, and he explained to me an overview of how to use string scaling software to do custom bass strings. It was very interesting, but because I don't do a lot of restringing, I thought I could always ask Newton for help when the time came. Well, Newton is gone, and I will never be able to ask him for help with scale design or analysis. I should have told him thanks for his help. This is a great loss for the piano industry as a whole and for me. We are losing many of our great technicians, who can never be replaced. On Friday evening, I read the e-mails on the list about Newton Hunt passing away, and I had a bad evening. On Saturday morning, I did a small pitch raise and tuning, and cried during the entire pitch raise. I was able to compose myself before doing the tuningm and before the customer came back in the room. The news of Newton's death has affected me more than the attacks on 9/11. This was personal. I didn't know anyone who died in the World Trade Tower collapse, so it was impersonal. This is very personal. I knew Newton, although not very well. I know what kind of person he was, and how helpful he was to me and many others. I miss Newton. Sorry about the length of this.
