Exactly..... Hammer shaping or replacement will very likely fix the string breakage problem. You may still notice a little string breakage from strings that were already damaged by the current hammer problem. It is simply amazing how much worn hammers can act like weapons when it comes to string breakage. It's the first thing I look for when a piano has a reputation for string breakage. The one faculty member I have here that tends to break strings will hardly ever succeed on pianos where I have maintained the hammers meticulously. He certainly keeps me looking at hammers :) Scott --------- -----Original Message----- From: owner-caut@ptg.org [mailto:owner-caut@ptg.org]On Behalf Of Doug Atkins Sent: Wednesday, April 10, 2002 7:51 AM To: caut@ptg.org Subject: Re: Baldwin SD-10 with a lot of strings breakage in the treble Jean-Marc, It sounds to me as if you may have already identified your problem, the hammers. Try shaping them if there is still enough felt left. If not replace them. Tell the administration that you simply cannot solve this problem without replacing the hammers! Hopefully this will help speed up the funding of this project. Doug Atkins Registered Piano Technician Cedarville University 937.766.7566 atkinsd@cedarville.edu
