One of my most memorable childhood experiences, in which I first realized I 
needed a more flexible model of the way the world works, occurred in 1962, 
when my high school chemistry teacher told us that glass was not a solid, but 
a supercooled liquid. Just when you think you're getting a handle on 
things....
