Sounds like all of the above.  The entire bass bridge hugging the rim is 
a real challenge.   I've tried, with limited success to overcome that 
close proximity by floating the entire bass bridge,plus vertcal hitches, 
but it really didn't do the trick.  The nasal quality remained.  It 
does'nt have to be as bad as the present victim's tonal condition, but 
I'd love to hear ideas on whether its possible to really get past that 
soundboard restriction.

How about taking a cutting torch to the plate and moving the bass bridge 
up 4 inches, or even better, putting the miserable thing out in the 
backyard and planting strawberries in it...poor thing?
