Laura, since you already have a gmail account, then you already have access to Google+. There's a black bar going across the top of your Gmail screen, which Google provides for quick access to their products. The tab on the far left, probably labeled "+Laura" will get you started on Google+. If you have an Android or iPhone smartphone, download the Google+ app from the appropriate store, and you'll get what Joe's talking about.
