I take it you DID temporarily attach a hose to the nipple on that left 
hand dead center, but your thumb over the hole in the spool box and suck 
on the hose to ascertain it does indeed leak?


When all else fails, think. Ask yourself two things.

(1): How could a ball bearing be air tight under these circumstances?

(2): Why does the smaller end of the dead center extend considerably 
beyond the bearing onto the take up spool end?
