Dang, too bad you can't edit after you send, lol. I did notice upon removing the rail, that two of those repair springs had been installed. I've done lots of full spring replacements, removing all the old springs and pressing in a new set, which I HATE! So I might just get a whole set of the screw in type; yeah their a lot more expensive, but much faster and easier to install. I know they are usually installed without removing the spring rail, but since I already removed it, I think maybe I'll just install them with the rail out, then just put it back in, as I usually do with the traditional press-in type. Haha, I figured someone might ask that. Surprisingly no. No tell-tale mouse urine odor or droppings present. Piano is clean a a whistle, so unless the last tech did a thorough cleaning, and deodorizing, there just isn't any evidence. No rust either, and the strings are shiny as new including the coils. Pretty unusual for the springs to just fail and break like that eh? cheers, Terry "UniGeezer" Peterson "Over 50, and not '2' Tired!" www.unigeezer.com From: imatunr at srvinet.com To: pianotech at ptg.org Date: Sun, 11 Mar 2012 19:32:28 -0600 Subject: Re: [pianotech] The case of the missing bridle straps! I decided to take the spinet action out (that's always fun!) for a closer inspection, and attempt to strengthen the hammer springs. Many were already broken, some were already missing, and the rest were at the breaking point, hence no spring tension for adequate hammer return! Oh well, another fun hammer spring rail job! Got a client with a 70's schafer & sons spinet. Looks like new having had little use, but many hammers won't return, and at first I thought the pinning was too tight, and/or just sluggish from non use and excess humidity, but then I noticed that there are NO bridle wires/straps at all. I've seen a few spinets without them before, but not very often. Any advice on getting the hammers to return, short of retro-fitting a whole new set of bridle wires and straps? I thought maybe strengthening the hammer springs and appling protek to all the centers might help as well. What's funny is that the whips have the little holes where they would go, but they were never installed at the factory.
