Hmm,  
   I have taken 76 plates out of Steinways, so far.  I have never seen a screen under a bearing bar.

I have no proof of this but I always assumed it was there to prevent the
thing from buzzing in case of a less than perfect fit. And some of those
castings were considerably less than perfect.

Does anyone know what purpose (if any) those mesh screens serve that are
under the movable counterbearing bars on older Steinways?  Are they just non
skid surfaces, or do they function as some kind of buzz barrier between the
bars and the plate, or something else I haven't thought of?
