Freehand works, but not exactly freehand. A well aligned bulls eye level 
on the 3/8" VSR drill, if I haven't managed to break it since I last 
used it, will do a decent job of tracking a vertical hole. It's harder, 
and requires more attention and time, but simpler than rigging a drill 
press. Freehanding without a plumb reference has a high potential for 
being disappointing, unfortunately.
