I know, Joe, it did to me as well. But on close and careful examination I could see the slight spreading by capillary action into the paper fibers that you get with fountain pen ink. And it was one in a series of consecutive regular dates in a sequence of several years, the others being in pencil. There was no sign of any of the dates, including the ink one, having been written over older dates underneath, and the paper is clearly very old, not from 1999!
