Don't ever "bump" a customer. (You might well lose them, and put yourself into stress.) If you encounter a piano that needs a lot of "prep" before tuning, just tell the owner that, sympathetically show them exactly what needs to be done, and then apologetically tell them that it's impossible to know what one will encounter, beforehand, via an initial phone call. Then reschedule that tuning, do what you can on the prep work without being late to your next gig, and move on.

P.S. I am often offered food by customers, prepared in conditions that are hygienically questionable. (Sometimes VERY questionable!) And, for this reason, always make sure I've had some food before I arrive,
so I can honestly tell them "Thanks, but I just ate!" This also makes dealing with unexpected, beat up "beasts" of pianos easier: for I'm bolstered with a full belly, before "doing battle" with them.
