Well......my grandfather built a violin out of Stainless Steel. And, actually sounds beautiful (not metallic) ! Yep, after many years of playing with all kinds of materials, including plain old sheet metal and various kinds of nut shells, He even filed a patent on it, however, it came back saying that you can't file on a "process", now if he made a new instrument, that would have been different.
