I've found that you can pop them off dry and cold with the proper tool but once in awhile you get part of the shank coming with it or the force required crushes the tip of the shank slightly. Now if yours are coming off that easily maybe that hide glue isn't forming quite as secure a bond as it should <G>. I've never had to resort to either heat or water to get a hammer off a shank, but I might have just been lucky - or sheltered. There are glues I haven't come up against yet, but Titebond, hot hide, Trim and molding, a few glues I couldn't identify, and the mystery white glue with the giant collars used in Yamahas will all pop off mechanically without heat.
