Incidentally, The Wood Book shows yellow birch to have a higher modulus 
of elasticity, modulus of rupture, and a slightly lower specific gravity 
than maple. I wonder why it wouldn't be suitable, and it's a lot easier 
to find.

Either way, or with John's suggestion, you can drill the holes in the 
butts deep enough to get a real glue joint.
