It's to let the strings go through while the capo is
solidly connected to the plate. It's for rigidity, not flexibility.

Exactly. This is not drilling a la a Bosendorfer bass bridge. Couldn't find a picture of it on their website but, as Ron describes, imagine the capo cast as one solid piece, continuously connected to the tuning pin field of the plate. Then, imagine drilling one hole for each of the unison sets of three strings to pass through the capo (instead of under it, as per the usual arrangement). The result is "webbing" connecting the capo to the t-pin field of the plate between each unison. Definitely more rigidity. A friend has a Steingraeber nine-footer of recent vintage (two, maybe three years old now) that sports this feature. What a piano! Great all-around, but particularly exceptional in the treble. He already had a Hamburg Steinway D reserved for him (in Europe), awaiting a second listen, but on that same trip, he stopped in Bayreuth (on the recommendation of your good brother and mine, David Andersen), and by the end of his visit to the factory, decided to go with the Steingraeber. This guy owns two Bosie Imperials and also had a Hamburg B (all also selected from the factories). Of the Steingaeber he says, "It's a f@#%king great piano!" (Darn, guess they won't be able to use that particular expression of enthusiasm for their product in their literature ;-)

Oh, I see. Someone else used to do that. Sohmer, was it? No, it's not
mass reduction. It's to let the strings go through while the capo is
solidly connected to the plate. It's for rigidity, not flexibility.
