[pianotech] Bad day in Truman

Tom,

Interesting information. I appreciate it.

Any guess as to how long the CA fix has held up so far? That would certainly be a lower cost approach, and most of the time I have used it on loose grand hammer heads, the problem has not returned.

Thanks,

Alan E.

Alan,
The Corfam problem can create a "loose" hammer head type noise on impact along with a scratchy sound as the jack scrapes against the corfam on it's way to the butt felt square. And of course don't forget the catcher shank glue joint will also click ..
I worked for a Baldwin dealer in the late 70's and even out of the box the heads were loose. A liitle glue at the bottom of the hole and a glue collar were all that were holding these on. Just remember the reduce the shank diameter to give the glue some room .
With the action in a cradle I have tried thin CA without removing the heads and they do tighten up but I'm not sure if it's a forever fix.

Might be that the glue joints on the hammers were starved, and somebody had to reglue them, forgetting to keep them in line as they dried. I've done a lot of these Baldwins with starved glue joints.
I have a client with a Baldwin upright which may have this same problem. Many, if not most, of notes make a "loose hammer head" sound, although none of the hammers actually feel loose when I tried to rock them back and forth (like loose hammers always do on a grand). Is that one of the conditions you have encountered with starved glue joints on these pianos? And is removing and rehanging the hammers the most efficient way to deal with this, or is there some other, slicker way? I did not have enough time with the piano to try removing and regluing one to answer the question of whether or not what I am hearing is, indeed, loose hammer heads.

Thanks,

Alan Eder
