I’ve used plastic polish to rejuvenate brass inlay. The surrounding poly ends up being just as shiny as new. Some brand names would be Novus #2, Mirror Glaze #5, Maguire’s #7. The last one is easily found at auto parts places and I butchered the spelling. Buffing compound works but you may have to finish with a finer grit for a scratch free result. As I recall, polishing compound isn’t as fine a grit. Toothpaste has worked in a pinch.
