 I think you mean Tap not Die. The tap changes the threads in the hole.  I 
try and save the original screws and also have an inherited  pile of brass 
plates and repair clips with a lifetime supply of all the screw sizes in the 
shop so I've never had the compatability problem you describe.

I know the brass rail system can be problematic but really when you think 
about it  there are a whole lot of WNG action Vose- Ivers and Pond  etc 
pianos out there and 100 years later everything (or almost everything) is 
intact along  with near  perfect hammer spacing.
I just picked up an 1890's  Henry and S.G. Lindeman upright (WNG) and the 
brass rail and plates are  as solid as when Phil Bondi was a little boy.
