    Roger:
    You are 110% correct in your analysis.  I agree with you completely.  I have encountered old uprights stored on a porch outside for years that were nothing but a ball of rust and 100 cents flat.  I was sure I would break every string.  Yanked it up 130 cents, do a second tune and not one string broken.  
    The next piano, a 3 year old Kimball in good shape, snapped one as soon as the pin was nudged.  There is little rhyme or reason to string breakage and almost no predictability.
