Boaz asked: "Hello
I will be replacing a pinblock in a small remote country workshop
that is not equipped with a sufficient ceiling or beams to handle a
traditional hoisting arrangement for plate removal/reinstallation.
Has anyone tried a free-standing automobile engine hoist for this
procedure? The one I am lookign at has a 78 3/4in max height."

I've done it a couple of times, pretty much under the same circumstances. I found that the "cherry picker" type hoist works very well. It does take a bit of practice to be able to lower the plate Slowly, however. I would suggest practicing with something else, outside/away from the piano.<G> Each time I did it, I also took the time to wrap the vertical parts with some padding so the darned thing didn't put major "dings' in the piano case. If you use some hoist slings of good capacity, you should feel safe about the capabilities of these hoists.
