[pianotech] computer upgrade -somewhat OT

Hi Tom:

I'll second Horace on that one. When I upgraded my computer about 2 months
ago, I went straight to Win 7 Professional, because I wanted to run some old
legacy XP apps, after downloading the XP compatibility mode from the
Microsoft website. Some things run, others don't. BUT, I still think the
upgrade is worth it, because I have had zero, zilch, nada, none problems
with Win 7 Professional. It is extremely stable - none of the warbles and
wobbles of XP and Vista, weird crashes, freezes, etc. This based on the
advice of a couple of my software developer customers, who use Pro because
of its stability. That aspect of it alone is worth the extra money for me.

I also got MS Office 2010. It loads very fast - word and excel come up in
about half a second on my I-3 processor with 4 GB of RAM. And Horace is
right - get the 4 GB of RAM.

It's the most trouble free machine I have had since DOS. No more cursing
and gnashing of teeth.- what a novelty!

I like the MACs too, but there will be some serious software costs that will
go along with that transition from windows, unless you are doing a dual boot
with Windows, running XP compatibility mode - it just seems too complicated
and expensive to make the switch for me.

Good luck to you.

Will Truitt

Hi, Tom,

Don't waste time with "Home Premium". Go straight to Pro; _but_ , get at
least 4GB of RAM, and plan on upgrading many/most of your apps fairly soon.

Either that, or get some flavor of MAC, and run your existing apps under
VMware Fusion (after first installing Win-something...XP Pro, if that's what
you had before.

If you have enough Linux experience that your learning curve wouldn't be
nearly vertical, that's definitely an option, too. Otherwise, how much time
do you have to invest in learning a new OS?

There are advantages and disadvantages in any of these directions. Since you
seem to be short on time, I suggest staying with Windoze...otherwise might
not. Be aware that the free compatability-mode VM that is offered (sort of)
with Win7 is free for a reason. Again, I suggest using VMware, this time
workstation, as a viable alternative to either buying a bunch of new
applications or trying to learn new "free" ones.

If you wish, please feel free to contact me off list. Be aware that I'm
pretty buried and may not be able to get back to you right away.

Please also remember that whatever recommendations you may get, your mileage
may vary. There is no cookie-solution that is truly viable.

Good Luck and Good Hunting.

Horace

List,

My shop computer has revolted and I'm purchasing a new PC today.

My question: This machine comes with Windows 7 Home Premium and I was
wondering if I should upgrade to Windows 7 Pro ?

 Duaine ? Any advice ?

Tom D.
