Re: [pianotech] Tax Question maybe OTWhy Paul? Because I'm angry!

I'm angry that we "the middle class" are carrying the tax burden in this country. The not really poor have figured out how to get Government assistance. The lawyer of the "to big to fail" companies have figured if they move their money over seas they can bypass paying taxes. On top of that, they have also figured out how to get Government assistance. So who's left paying taxes to support this great County? .........WE ARE!

If I let my conscience (integrity and ethics) be my guide I would have stopped paying my taxes many years ago. I pay my taxes because I've worked to hard for what I have and I don't want the Government taking it away from me. The middle class are the only people in this Country that have something to loose. So we protect it by "doing the right thing".

I can't listen to my conscience because it keeps calling me an idiot!

  Al,

I didn't preach. I simply replied to Matthew's question and rather smart reply to Wim about spy cams, hoping to nudge him to do what he ultimately knows to be the right thing. I implicated no one. Why you have chosen to go OT, offer social commentary, become defensive and assure us you pay your share of taxes, and accuse me of preaching is rather a mystery to me.

I understand. Like the AGI, Haliburton and Goldman Sachs lawyers do. Oh yes, we can't do any of that.

After we pay all the taxes we owe (and I do pay every penny that should be paid), I think I'll set up a fund and contribute to help the big financials pay theirs. That sounds like the right thing to do.

I know from all the technicians I talk to, that we are among the most honest group of Americans who do pay their taxes. I think you're preaching to the choir here Paul.

    Matthew,

The IRS may not have spy cams, but our tax laws do require that we file honest and truthful tax returns. Otherwise, you may be accused of fraud. To encourage compliance, the IRS performs various kinds of audits, which sometimes means calling us in to their offices and asking us to justify or prove the deductions we claim on a return. Be prepared to do that to their satisfaction, or have your deduction denied.

Lots of times, it really comes down to our own integrity and ethics when deciding what's honest and truthful. As you probably know, some citizen filers, accountants and tax lawyers will "stretch" certain parameters a little more than others. Determine your own tolerance for risk. :)

BTW, I have a law degree from Georgetown, am an inactive member of the Pennsylvania Bar, and have never practiced law. The above is not intended as legal advice or counsel!

        By watching instructional DVD's :-)

If the only thing you use the TV for is to watch those tapes, then, yes, the TV can be taken off as a "tool". But if you use it to watch a ball game, or your favorite soap, then you can only deduct that percentage of time you watch the DVD. Kind of like your car. I figure that 80% of my time I drive my car is for business purposes. The other 20% is for personal use.

Are we able to deduct TV purchases? As long, of course, I use it solely for purposes related to our field?
