[pianotech] What is this?

Thanks so much John and Tom.  Now, the question is, is there something to use to treat this, or will it be okay left alone?  This substance is no where else inside or out on the piano, except on the plate.

It is a salt or a mixture of salts of copper, commonly called verdigris, caused by chemicals in the atmosphere reacting with the copper in the bronzing powder.  This would not happen if the bronzing had been effectively lacquered over with an impermeable lacquer.
