Hi Ed, FYI... it ends up that most violin strings (except the E on the far right side) are wound... completely, top to bottom.  So when a string breaks at the core, the windings keep it from flying.  Actually, in 55 years, I've never had a string break on me when playing.  

They "magically" do so while in the case... so when you're ready to play for an audience, you better have some spares in your case, cause you're almost never near a store at the time.
