I have had similar descriptions for many pianos, it is an unenlightened reference to the plate. I'll bet the 1860 came from a patent listing or company founding date on the plate.

Subject: [pianotech] Steel High Back piano?

I got a call yesterday from someone who wants me to come service his piano. He said it was a "steel high back" piano made in 1860. I didn't ask him to spell it, but that's what it sounded like. He said it had been in his family a very long time, and he seemed proud of the fact that it was "numbered."

Does anybody have any idea what this guy is talking about? I checked Pierce for spelling variations but couldn't find anything resembling "Steil" or "Heibach" or anything like that which would have been around in 1860. I'm guessing this guy just has a common old upright from around 1900 and he thinks there's something special about it.
