[pianotech] Protruding Lead weights in old grands

Does anyone know what type of metal or metals were added to lead in the mid 1920's to the mid 40's? I've been told that the lead back then was mixed with cadmium, but I would like to get clarification on this, as cadmium, as well as lead, is toxic.

The oxidation formed on the old, swollen and protruding leads is whitish and powdery, and easily becomes airborne when disturbed. I have dealt with this situation many times in the past, and found a way to remove the excess lead, without creating any lead dust by "cork screwing" it out with a forstner bit.

The problem is, that the other oxidated, powdery material in the lead-that caused the swelling-does tend to go airborne. I do this outside, with plenty of ventilation and wear a dust mask. I'm just not sure if this is adequate protection. Thanks in advance for any suggestions in this matter.
