Yes, Paul, there is a split tray.  However, it did not figure into the problem or solution.  

Here's a little more info, since the split damper tray has come up:  the "plucking" sound happened with the full sustain pedal and also with the bass sustain pedal.  The two notes were not at the break between the two;  they were perhaps a P4 down from the break.

Hi Garret, the damper guide rail was tight, and the split tray was not warped;  neither contributed to the problem or solution.
