[pianotech] Tuning with distractions

Here's a story one kid will not soon forget. First, you have to know my dad. He was a boxer and he never took ANY CRAP from anyone….

When I was a teenager, I'm 53 now, my dad told me this story. He said, Jer, today, I was working at the college. (Still the same college I refer to today sometimes) This IDIOT smart assed kid, kept following me around from room to room going ping, ping, ping, ping, ping while I'm trying to tune. Dad said, you know how annoying that is right? Oh yeah! I said waiting with baited breath... I could just about guess what was coming… Well, dad continued, the kid went home today with a headache. I started smiling. Dad continued, I told the little bas----- 3 times to KNOCK it off and get out of the room, I can't tune with you in doing that. But, he chose to follow me around instead being a total pain in the a**. Finally, dad said, I'd had enough. I got up from the piano, walked over to him and of course, by that time, I was really POED! (I can imagine, knowing my dad!) He was a good sized college kid. I told him, once more, if I were you, I would get out of the room now, if you know what's best for you. Instead, dad said, right after I told him that, he leaned forward toward me and went PING with his chin sticking up and jutting out right at me. Well, he said, it was a perfect shot, so, I laid one on the bottom of his chin as hard as I could sending him sprawling across the room into the wall onto the other side. By the time he hit the floor, I had run over there and grabbed him by the scruff of his neck ready to pound his cocky little face to a pulp but, he was laying on the floor whimpering like a little baby begging me not to hit him again. I said, well, did you? He said, no, he learned his lesson. I don't think that little b----- will bother me again so quickly… Dad never even saw him again after that.

Back then, you could get away with that. Today, you'd be sued and it would be your fault even though they started the antagonizing.

There is a guy, I am convinced, who in the Fall watches to see when I leave in the morning to go out on my tunings, and follows me around from client to client with his gas-powered leaf blower. He looks like the same guy anyway.

Has anyone ever tried to tune during the cicada cycles? The last infestation, I had an outside tuning under a tent for a wedding, and was able to figure that the chirrr of the cicada was almost a perfect fifth. Really helped me in the temperament area. :-)

Daughter in living room watching TV (spongebob I think), son in room practicing his electric guitar to a precorded soundtrack, mom in kitchen on the phone, and it just so happened to be the day the lawn service showed up! Go figure...

It does work (in most cases) to ask, but it’s also embarrassing to have to be reminded, no matter how nicely. That’s why I’m interested in advance notice.

For me, I try and work through a certain amount of noise but, if it escalates too much, I just politely tell them that I need it quiet. "You are giving me to much competition. (I say with a smile) I need it quiet if you want the piano to sound nice." They apologize and hush up.

I’ve had some unavoidable situations like that too, like the rock band doing a sound check during my half-hour tuning window…but in a home setting, it seems like we ought to be able to head off things like loud talking, vacuum cleaners, TV, etc. I’ve been thinking about sending a letter to new clients in advance of the first appointment, diplomatically pointing out that the quieter the environment, the better the tuning. At the same time, it could be a marketing/educational opportunity for other services. Anybody else doing this? Done it and stopped? What was your experience?
