[pianotech] Tuning with distractions

If Laroy Edwards offers a class again at a convention, take it! In Grand Rapids, he covered not only the many tools he developed (which others often make and sell without giving credit where it is due), but also some of his approaches to running a piano service business. Among those gems were a tuning appointment reminder in the form of a postcard which, in the polite expression you would expect from this supreme gentleman, tells the client to be there, be quiet, have the piano cleared off, and be ready with the money.

I’ve had someunavoidable situations like that too, like the rock band doing a sound checkduring my half-hour tuning window…but in a home setting, it seems like weought to be able to head off things like loud talking, vacuum cleaners, TV,etc. I’ve been thinking about sending a letter to new clients in advanceof the first appointment, diplomatically pointing out that the quieter theenvironment, the better the tuning. At the same time, it could be a marketing/educationalopportunity for other services. Anybody else doing this? Done it and stopped? Whatwas your experience?
