We've all seen some unappreciated cost-cutting from Steinway & Sons over the years (and, to be fair, some improvements as well), but I'd have to say that "cloth shanks" would pretty much take the cake;  I bet those pianos have an even more pillowy tone than usual!  I bet you'd have to smother them in lacquer repeatedly to get any sound at all.

Now the teflon wippens I might believe....
