[pianotech] Steinway Teflon?

Hi,

Ed is right; the phase out started in the '82/'83 production year
with D's and B's; by '84 just about everything that had had old style
teflon was through the line...it's not like they removed parts from
what was already in the line and/or in supply. What's a little
deceptive is that the use of teflon has continued with
teflon-impregnated felt bushings even while the Renner/Hamburg parts
were also in use off and on (mostly from '84 through '87). And, as
we all know (from endless repetition) the geometries weren't exactly
interchangeable.

In fairness, though, a great deal of time and resources went into
working out what combination of machining, felt density, type of
solution, etc has gone into the impregnated bushings over the
years. While the earlier stuff was pretty nasty, and there is still
room for improvement, the later production has been reasonably stable.

One of the things I'm looking to see is how Ron Losby's integration
of the various parts, techniques and production processes between NY
and Hamburg fairs in practice. I think both ends of the equation
have something to learn/gain from each other.

Best.

Horace
