Ed,

Don't go to the pool.
Find a Wi-Fi hot spot (there are many).
Drink water - it's more healthful (yeah right - I need my coffee too!).

Focus on the convention, not the hotel.  I share your distaste for things
"Veags Style" (read: silly expensive and rather baudy) but, BUT the
convention is really first rate.  Instructors (as usual) are wonderful,
classes are wonderful, the exhibit hall is very good, and opportunities to
network and learn from the greatest minds in the business are innumerable.
And while things are expensive, it is still worth the education.

Las Vegas leaves a lot to be desired, but the convention is really first
rate.
