Hi Zoe,
I apprenticed with Michael Dragoman in Guelph, Ontario for a year (1981),
then studied Piano Technology with Ted Sambell at George Brown College in
Toronto for 20 months (1982-84). In between my two years with Ted, I landed
a two month internship (1983) at the University of Western Ontario with Don
Stephenson and Anne Fleming-Reid. Then I moved to Saskatoon, SK (1984) where
I set up my own business and was taken under the wing of Ron Giesbrecht. I
worked closely with him on several projects, and he checked my work
frequently before he moved to Ontario (1987) to become Yamaha Canada's
National Service Manager for pianos. I'm an Associate member of the PTG and
a member of CAPT <http://pianotu.ning.com/> . I've attended numerous
workshops, etc., try to read as much as I can, and stay in touch with people
who know a great deal more than I do about this craft.
Counting my blessings,
Bruce Gibson

Hi Zoe,
It's been a while, but I'll toss out some thoughts.
I started with a home study course. Very bad. Could have learned more from
a few books I could get at the public library.
Went to work at a large piano store that had a full rebuilding and
refinishing shop. Learned a LOT by being there.
They had about 10 years worh of the PTG Journal and I read through those.
Learned a bunch there, too.
Went to a number of PTG Conventions and took numerous classes. Learned a
bunch there.
Read through the archives of this list. Lots of really good stuff there if
you have time to sift through a lot that probably won't mean much to you.
Stick around here and you'll learn who generally writes the things that will
be meaningful to you.
If you haven't already, join the guild, and do your best to hang out with
people who know more than you do! I was lucky to have had just a little
time with some pretty great guys, mostly at PTG classes and gatherings, some
probably wouldn't even remember me, but I remember them... Dave & Willis
Snyder, David Hughes, Dell Fandrich, Ron Nossaman, Andre Bolduc, Roger
Jolly, and many more that my feeble memory isn't bringing to mind for me as
I type this.
Listen, learn, absorb all you can. You won't remember it all. But what you
do learn will accumulate. :-)
Best of luck,
Brian

Subject: [pianotech] personal question- where did you learn PT?
As a current student of Piano Technology, trying to carve out my path of
learning on Vancouver Island BC?. I wonder where different people have
gained their knowledge. If you would like to share your experience I would
be thrilled? because there is so much knowledge and talent on this forum!!
Thanks
Zoe

Hi Zoe
I think ideally the best situation is attending full time at one of the
several fine Piano Technology Institutes coupled a mentoring
relationship with an experienced technician. As this was not possible
for me I chose to enroll in the Randy Potter program and I reinforce my
learning by attending as many as possible of the national and regional
conventions, seminars, and chapter meetings available to me. Soaking up
some of the incredible knowledge represented on this listed is my
day-to-day sustenance. I read the PTG Journal from cover to cover as
soon as it arrives and retain it as a ready resource.I'm also finding
that as the pianos I service increase in quantity and variety, so does
my confidence, understanding and quality of tuning.
I'm confident that others will have more valuable insights
Phil

Thanks Brian
I am doing most of your suggestions already
I am an Associate of the local guild- and there is a tremendous wealth of
expertise here.I am also planning on attending 2 PTG conferences this year
I am faithfully reading many posts and as many journal archives as I can- a
lot goes over my head- but some things are starting to sink in and make more
sense
I am also half way through Randy Potter's course (although have not sent in
my paperwork yet.) and plan to take a woodworking course this spring
Of course- I ogle some of the Piano technology full time schools- but
relocating with my family is not the easiest thing
Warm regards
Zoe
