Hello Marshall,
The first Square piano was made by Johann Zumpe,
a German, living in London England in 1760.
He was in partnership with Gabriel Buntebart also a
German.
The last Square ,as close as I can figure, was made
near the mid 1940s.
A new Mathushek Square was advertised in the
"Tuners Journal " on page 6 January issue of 1942.
Facts are few but can be found, often with great
difficulty.
Marshall in the PTG Foundation Museum located in
the PTG. Home Office is displayed a Buntebart Sq.
built in 1782 and a Mathushek built in 1936.
Both pianos mentioned above are verifiable as
to age and brand.
This gives the Square Pianos a production span of
one hundred and eighty two, that's ( 1 8 2 ) YEARS.
This makes one wonder at those who would scoff,
scorn or mock anything so complicated that would
last so long.!!!!!!!!
Regards
Jack Wyatt
Museum Curator
