Today I tuned a Baldwin Acro, about 40 years old. There were staples in the hammers from A0 to G5, which is not unusual. But what I have never seen before is that the staples got closer and closer to the strike point, to where on G5, the staple was at about 2 o'clock, on the shoulder of the hammer. What is also very interesting is the difference in tone between G5 and G#5. G5 is very dull, and lifeless, as if there is a mute on the string, while G#5 rings loud and true. There was no sense even telling the customer about the problem, as the treble bridge was loose from the break up to about C4, which didn't help the tone of the middle of the piano. But all she cared about was that it played a little and she can't even use her left hand. Gorgeous view, however, of Kaneohe Bay, from her living room window.
